The National Institute of Design (NID) in India is primarily known for its undergraduate and postgraduate design programs, and it has a strong reputation in these areas.

The professional competence of inventing and developing context-led concepts and converting them into real solutions for the benefit of individuals, society, industry, and the environment is referred to as design. Object, communication, service, interface, and system design necessitates in-depth research and the creative synthesis of knowledge and ideas from various fields and experiences. In an original framework, design thinking combines the greatest sensitivities of the arts, the logic of science, and the utilitarian goals of technology.

The concepts of 'learning by doing' and 'learning from the field' are central to all of NID's academic programs and activities. The Institute's curriculum and pedagogy have grown uniquely from a value-based multidisciplinary approach to creative problem solving in which research is vital to the design process.

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Design will be awarded after a period of advanced study culminating in the design of an innovative solution/approach/method/interface for a product/communication/service/experience, as well as an accompanying thesis that extends the body of knowledge and the application of design thinking, process, and practice.

The program is available to educators and professionals in design and related sectors who want to rethink their own practice or knowledge base while pushing the frontiers of the discipline via practice innovation and the creation of new design theories. The PhD program at NID is benchmarked to a level similar to doctorate research in design at prestigious universities both in India and overseas.
