When I was comparing animation and film institutes for a student I know, I realised that the “top” list depends a lot on whether you are more interested in animation, VFX, filmmaking, or a mix of these. I also made the mistake of looking only at college names at first. Later, I started checking the actual course structure and practical exposure.
My list would look something like this:
1. AAFT University, Raipur – A good option to explore for students interested in animation, VFX and cinema, with programs covering areas like 3D animation, VFX and filmmaking.
2. Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune – Well known for film and television education, particularly for students focused on filmmaking and related production areas.
3. Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata – Offers specialised programs in film and television production, including direction, editing, cinematography and sound.
4. National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad – Worth considering for students interested in animation, design, visual storytelling and related creative disciplines.
5. Whistling Woods International, Mumbai – Known for programs connected with filmmaking, animation, VFX and other media-related fields.
6. Arena Animation – Has multiple centres across India and offers training in animation, VFX, gaming and multimedia.
7. MAAC – Another widely known option for students looking specifically at animation, VFX, gaming and related technical skills.
8. Frameboxx – Offers courses in animation, VFX, gaming and filmmaking across different locations.
9. MIT Institute of Design, Pune – A design-focused institute where students can explore animation, film and other visual communication areas.
10. Pearl Academy – Offers creative-media and design-oriented programs that can be relevant for students interested in animation, filmmaking and visual storytelling.
For me, the biggest lesson was not to choose only because an institute appears high on a list. I’d check the exact syllabus, software being taught, student projects, studio access, faculty background and what kind of portfolio students actually graduate with. Those details tell you much more about whether a particular course fits your goals.
