NATA, or the National Aptitude Test in Architecture, is an entrance exam that tests the aptitude of students seeking admission into architecture programs offered by various institutions in India. NATA is conducted by the Council of Architecture (CoA), which is the regulatory body for the architecture profession in India. The exam aims to assess a student's drawing and observation skills, aesthetic sensitivity, critical thinking ability, and sense of proportion and perspective.

To get into NATA college, a student needs to qualify in the NATA exam with a minimum score that is set by the participating institutions. However, before a student can appear for the NATA exam, they need to fulfil certain eligibility criteria. In this article, we will discuss the education requirements that a student needs to fulfil to get into NATA college.

Educational Qualifications Required for NATA

The CoA has set the following educational qualifications as mandatory for a student to be eligible for the NATA exam:

  1. 10+2 or equivalent examination passed with Mathematics as one of the subjects; or
  2. 10+3 Diploma (any stream) passed and recognized by Central/State Govt. with Mathematics as one of the subjects; or
  3. International Baccalaureate Diploma passed after 10 years of Schooling with Mathematics as compulsory subject of examination.

Let us discuss each of these qualifications in detail.

  • 10+2 Examination Passed with Mathematics as One of the Subjects

A student who has passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized board with Mathematics as one of the subjects is eligible for the NATA exam. The 10+2 examination is a two-year program offered by various boards in India, including the CBSE, ICSE, and State Boards.

The 10+2 curriculum consists of four or five subjects, depending on the board. The compulsory subjects include English and Mathematics, while the remaining subjects are chosen by the student based on their interests. Students who wish to pursue architecture after 10+2 need to ensure that they have studied Mathematics as one of the subjects in the 10+2 curriculum.

  • 10+3 Diploma (Any Stream) Passed Recognized by Central/State Govt. with Mathematics as One of the Subjects

A student who has completed a 10+3 diploma from a recognized board with Mathematics as one of the subjects is eligible for the NATA exam. The 10+3 diploma is a three-year program offered by various boards in India, including the State Boards and the Open School Boards.

The 10+3 diploma curriculum consists of various streams, including Commerce, Arts, and Science. Students who wish to pursue architecture after completing a 10+3 diploma need to ensure that they have studied Mathematics as one of the subjects in the diploma curriculum.

  • International Baccalaureate Diploma Passed after 10 Years of Schooling with Mathematics as Compulsory Subject of Examination

A student who has completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma after ten years of schooling with Mathematics as a compulsory subject of examination is eligible for the NATA exam. The IB Diploma is a two-year program offered by various international schools in India.

The IB Diploma curriculum consists of six subjects, including Mathematics, English, a second language, a science subject, a humanities subject, and an elective subject. Students who wish to pursue architecture after completing the IB Diploma need to ensure that they have studied Mathematics as a compulsory subject of examination in the diploma curriculum.

Conclusion

In conclusion, to get into NATA college, a student needs to fulfil the educational qualifications set by the CoA. These qualifications include passing the 10+2 or equivalent examination with Mathematics as one of the subjects, completing a 10+3 diploma recognized by the Central/ State Govt. with Mathematics as one of the subjects, or passing the International Baccalaureate Diploma after ten years of schooling with Mathematics as a compulsory subject of examination.

Apart from the educational qualifications, it is also essential for a student to have a keen interest in architecture, creativity, and a passion for design. Good communication skills, critical thinking ability, and an eye for detail are also important for a successful career in architecture.
