IIT Delhi Launches Unique B.Tech in Design Program : Only 20 Seats, Also Check Eligibility & Seat-Allocation Process
What’s the Big News!
The Department of Design at IIT Delhi is introducing a brand-new undergraduate program: a four-year B.Tech in Design, beginning in the academic year 2025-26.
In a fresh move, the institute will host an online Open House on 26 October 2025 to guide interested candidates.
The programme is housed under the Department of Design and aims to blend technical engineering knowledge with creative design thinking.
Key Program Features
- Program Duration & Start: Four years, commencing 2025-26.
- Seat Intake: Initial intake of just 20 students.
- Dual Entrance Requirements:
- A valid rank in the JEE (Advanced) exam.
- Qualified score in UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design).
- Curriculum Structure:
- About 50 % coursework from core design discipline.
- Remaining from engineering, humanities, management and allied departments (interdisciplinary).
- Learning Focus: Program emphasises: design thinking, socio-technical systems, research methods, teamwork, communication, design + technology fusion.
Eligibility Criteria
Academic & Subject Requirements
- Candidates must have passed the Class 12 (or equivalent) examination in 2024 or 2025.
- Required subjects at 10 + 2 level: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM).
Age & Other Conditions
- Applicants must have been born on or after 1 October 2000.
- A five-year age relaxation is provided for candidates from SC, ST and PwD categories.
Entrance Exams & Selection
- Valid ranking in the JEE (Advanced) exam is mandatory.
- Qualification in the UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design) is also mandatory.
- Note: Clearing only one of these exams is not sufficient — both are required for eligibility.
Seat-Allocation & Intake Details
- The initial intake for the B.Tech in Design program is 20 students for the first batch.
- The seat-allocation process will be administered through the regular institute admission conduit and follows the merit list based on JEE Advanced rank and UCEED qualification.
- Seats are allotted based on :
- Performance in JEE Advanced ranking
- UCEED eligibility
- Possibly institute-specific applications/choice filling (awaited)
Admission Process Steps (Tentative)
- Step 1: Appear for JEE Advanced and UCEED
- Step 2: Register for B.Tech in Design via IIT Delhi admissions portal
- Step 3: Submit preferences/choices when the seat allocation portal opens
- Step 4: Allocation of seat based on combined merit and available intake
- Step 5: Confirm seat by paying acceptance fee / completing institute formalities
Why This Matters for Design Aspirants
- With only 20 seats, competition will be intense — candidates must plan early for both JEE Advanced and UCEED.
- The dual-exam requirement means you must not only be technically strong (engineering foundation) but also design-aptitude ready.
- Understanding the seat-allocation process helps in aligning strategy: choice filling, backup plans, wait-list awareness.
- Being aware of eligibility ensures you don’t miss on key qualifiers or get disqualified on technical grounds (e.g., age, subject combination).
Take Note
For students with a creative bent and a strong foundation in maths-physics-chemistry (required for JEE Advanced), this B.Tech in Design at IIT Delhi is a game-changer. If you’re seeking admission in the 2026 batch, begin preparing now — brush up on JEE Advanced topics and design aptitude (UCEED) simultaneously. With limited seats and high demand, the earlier you align your portfolio, mindset and preparation, the better.
